Assemble A Survival Kit

By: Kevin Manieri
George’s Music

A wise person once said, “Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst”.  We musicians would do well to live by this code.  We’ve all had those performances where it seems like everything breaks, falls over, works intermittently, or blows up.  Assemble a “survival kit” for shows and you’ll be able to handle anything that comes your way.  You may not need everything listed below, and you can probably get away with leaving it in your vehicle, but trust me – having at least some of this stuff nearby will be a big help someday.

Guitar/Bass Survival Kit:

  • Straplocks
  • Extra strap
  • Extra picks
  • Extra strings
  • Extra instrument cable(s)
  • Extra speaker cable(s)
  • Extension cords and power strips
  • A backup instrument and/or amp

Drums Survival Kit:

  • Multiple drum keys
  • Extra sticks
  • An extra snare head
  • An extra kick drum head
  • Extra earplugs!

Keyboard Survival Kt:

  • Extra keyboard stand
  • Extra music stand
  • Bag or case for keyboard
  • Extra power supply

Vocals Survival Kit:

  • Backup microphone
  • Batteries for wireless unit(s)
  • Extra microphone cables
  • Extra mic stand
  • Extra mic clip

If you’re a DJ, a flautist, or a cellist, your list may differ, but the point is to be prepared.  Always have a plan B – you’re bound to use it one way or another!

  1. Harry Schwab says:

I attach a leather keychain pick holder to my guitar strap with one or two “emergency” picks in it. If my pick is lost or dropped at an inopportune time, the holder can be unclipped quickly to grab a pick. This prevents scrambling around looking for one.
